- DisputedSources agree that Jews of Blois were burned after a ritual-murder charge on 26 May 1171, but they do not agree on the number: 31 (Jewish Encyclopedia France; Ephraim of Bonn's first figure), 32 (MAHJ; Ephraim's "about thirty-two") or 33 (Encyclopaedia Judaica).
Summary
On the testimony of a Christian servant who claimed to have seen a Jew throw a child's body into the Loire, Count Theobald V of Blois imprisoned the Jews of Blois. A priest urged an ordeal by water; the witness floated and the charge was treated as proved. Those who refused baptism were burned on 26 May 1171 (20 Sivan 4931). Ephraim of Bonn records that they sang the Aleinu as the fire rose. Jacob Tam ordered the day observed as a fast in France, England and the Rhineland. This was the first ritual-murder accusation in France.

Jewish population (estimates)
- Worldwide: 1,000,000 – 1,500,000[8]c. 1170Between the 12th and 17th centuries DellaPergola judges world Jewry never much below one million nor above 1.5 million. The late-12th-century point is processed from Benjamin of Tudela.
- Blois: 40[6]The Jewish Encyclopedia's table of medieval communities, citing Joseph ha-Kohen, gives 40 Jews in Blois in 1171, the year of the burning. Articles on the burning itself give 31 to 33 dead, so 40 is the community figure in that table for the year of the event.
