- DisputedEncyclopaedia Judaica gives about 1,500 killed. Contemporary cemetery records summarized in the 2006 article give 550 burials in the days of the pogrom and immediately after, while local opinion cited in the same documents spoke of 1,500–2,000. The article argues that some of the 550 died in the fighting and bombardment for the town, not only in the pogrom.
Summary
In September 1919, after White forces retook Fastiv from the Red Army, Cossack units of the armed forces fighting under Denikin's command carried out a pogrom against the Jewish population. Encyclopaedia Judaica dates the massacre to the beginning of September and gives about 1,500 dead. A 2006 review of contemporary Jewish-committee and Red Cross reports places the main violence on 10–13 September 1919, with 550 bodies buried on the Jewish cemetery by 18 September and a local "general opinion" of 1,500–2,000 dead. The White Army used antisemitic slogans that associated Jews with Bolshevism.
