- DisputedEncyclopaedia Judaica dates the massacre to May 1035 and gives 6,000 dead. The 6,000 figure comes from a late chronicle and is a round number. Samuel ben Hofni died in 1034, so a letter of condolence from him fits a date before 1035 better than after. The Geniza letter confirms killings in Fez but does not name Tamim or give a death toll.
Summary
After capturing Fez from the Maghrawa, the Banu Ifran under Abu'l-Kamal Tamim killed Jews in the city, seized their property and carried off Jewish women, according to Encyclopaedia Judaica (which dates the massacre to May 1035 and gives 6,000 dead). A copy of a letter from Samuel ben Hofni Gaon (d. 1034) to the community of Fez, preserved in the Cairo Geniza, records the killing of community members and the destruction of a synagogue and offers condolences. The community was not extinguished; later in the century Isaac Alfasi taught in Fez.
