- DisputedEncyclopaedia Judaica dates the riot to 20 May 1941 and gives seven Jews killed. Satloff describes a three-day outbreak in May 1941 and gives eight Jews killed. The two sources also differ on whether the violence is framed as a one-day exception or a multi-day pogrom.
Summary
On 20 May 1941, during the Vichy period in the French Protectorate of Tunisia, rioters attacked Jews in Gabès. Encyclopaedia Judaica, in an entry by Haim Saadoun, records seven Jews killed and about twenty wounded and describes the riot as the exception to otherwise peaceful Jewish–Muslim coexistence in the town. Satloff describes a three-day outbreak that began with an attack by about thirty men on a synagogue and left eight Jews killed and twenty injured; he writes that local Arab policemen were ineffective or complicit and that Vichy police later arrested perpetrators, five of whom were executed in the Tunis kasbah. Survivor testimony collected by Satloff records killings in private homes and an attempt to cut a Jewish woman's throat in the street.
