Summary
On 26 February 1569 Pope Pius V issued the brief Hebraeorum gens, which accused the Jews of various offences including magic and ordered them expelled from all papal territory except Rome and Ancona. Encyclopaedia Judaica states that they were tolerated in those two cities because of their utility in the Levant trade. The Jewish Encyclopedia records that, despite remonstrances from cardinals and the expected fiscal loss, about 1,000 families were expelled; a few became Christians and the large majority migrated to the Ottoman Empire. Ancona and Rome remained the only papal cities of legal Jewish residence until Clement VIII repeated the restriction in 1593, adding Avignon.
