Summary
On 8 March 2016 David Fremd, a Jewish businessman and official of Uruguay's Israelite Central Committee, was stabbed to death on a street in Paysandú. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported that the attacker yelled "Allahu Akbar," that Fremd was stabbed ten times, and that police confirmed the next day that the killing was antisemitic after the suspect said, according to El Observador, "I killed a Jew following Allah's order." Búsqueda, reviewing the court file, identifies the attacker as Carlos Omar Peralta, also known as Abdullah Omar, and states that he waited at a central corner to kill Fremd because he was a Jew and to carry out what Peralta called a mission from Allah. A court later found him not criminally responsible; in 2024 a judge ended the security measures that had held him at Hospital Vilardebó.
