Summary
In 1834, during the peasant revolt against Muhammad Ali of Egypt, the Jewish quarter of Safed was attacked. The Jewish Encyclopedia states that after Druze plunder of the quarter in 1833, it was again pillaged the following year in a persecution lasting thirty-three days, with damage of 135,250 piasters according to Löwe; when Ibrahim Pasha returned he imposed an indemnity on surrounding villages and repaid the Jews 7 percent of their losses. The Jewish Virtual Library records that the community was pillaged by Arab villagers in 1834, that Israel Bak's Hebrew press was destroyed and Bak wounded in the revolt, and that Rabbi Avraham Dov of Avritch led Hasidim through a devastating 1834 pogrom. No opened source gives a Jews-killed figure for this outbreak.
