- DisputedEncyclopaedia Judaica dates the burning to 22 February 1349. Winkler, citing the Chronik der Stadt Zurich, gives St. Matthias' eve, 23 February 1349. Jewish Encyclopedia Switzerland (not used as the day source) printed "eve of St. Matthias, Sept. 21," which contradicts the feast date.
Summary
At the end of 1348 the well-poisoning rumour reached Zurich. Encyclopaedia Judaica states that the municipal council first tried to protect the Jews but yielded to the populace, and that numbers of Jews were burned at the stake on 22 February 1349; their property was confiscated. Albert Winkler, citing the Chronik der Stadt Zurich, dates the burning to St. Matthias' eve, 23 February 1349, "because it was said that they had placed poison in the fountains." Jewish Encyclopedia records the same well-poisoning charge and a contemporaneous accusation that Jews had murdered a boy; it does not give a day. Surviving Jews were later expelled. Jews were again in Zurich by 1352.

Jewish population (estimates)
- Worldwide: 1,000,000 – 1,200,000[15]c. 1300DellaPergola's Fundamentals Table 2 gives 1.2 million in 1300. Botticini and Eckstein Table 9 give about 1–1.2 million for the early fourteenth century.
- Holy Roman Empire: 40,000[35]c. 1500Botticini and Eckstein's Germany-Austria (GA) series, which they equate for 1500–1800 with the Holy Roman Empire area of their map, cites Guggenheim and Toch at about 40,000 Jews around 1500 (~0.25% of ~16 million). This is German lands / HRE as defined in that appendix, not a separately enumerated sum of every imperial estate.
