Summary
A pogrom broke out in Warsaw on Catholic Christmas Day 1881 and lasted three days. The Jewish Encyclopedia records 12 Jews killed, many women assaulted, and two million rubles' worth of property destroyed. YIVO places the riot in the 1881–1882 wave that had begun in Ukraine in the spring. YIVO's Warsaw article notes that the event shook the faith of assimilationist Jews in Polish society's progress toward toleration. Count Todleben in the neighbouring Lithuanian provinces kept disorders there slight.

Jewish population (estimates)
- Worldwide: 7,800,000[5]c. 1880
- Russian Empire: 3,932,000 – 4,748,640[20]c. 1881Bartal and Moss (Posen Library) give about 2,912,000 Jews in the Pale of Settlement and 1,020,000 in Congress Poland in 1881 (sum 3,932,000), excluding Jews outside those zones. Boustan cites about 4.1 million for the empire in 1881. A contemporary German compilation of Russian Jewish statistics (Freimann Sammlung) reconstructs 4,748,640 for 1879/1884 (Pale 2,920,639 + Poland ~1,078,000 + outside the Pale ~750,000) and says the total had by then passed five million. Figures cover the Russian Empire including Congress Poland.
- Warsaw: 98,698 – 127,917[4]Jews in Warsaw in 1876 (98,698) and in 1882 (127,917), the counts in the Jewish Encyclopedia table that bracket the December 1881 pogrom. That table gives 231,678 for 1897; YIVO gives 210,500 for 1897 and 72,800 for 1864.
